Mount Vernon Avenue Intersection Designs With Roundabout Deferred
After presenting a proposal for new intersection designs on Mount Vernon Avenue, the City of Alexandria is deferring a decision.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — After proposed new designs for several Mount Vernon Avenue intersections were presented, the City of Alexandria is deferring consideration of the changes.
The intersection designs were presented as part of the Mount Vernon Avenue North project, which is a target of safety improvements due to community feedback and a history of crashes causing injury and death.
The designs were initially headed to the Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board for approval on Jan. 22. The proposal will instead go to the Traffic and Parking Board later in spring 2024.

The project focuses on four intersections in the northern section of Mount Vernon Avenue between Four Mile Run and West Glebe Road.
At the Mount Vernon Avenue intersection with Four Mile Run, curb extensions are proposed to reduce pedestrian crossing distances, reduce vehicle-pedestrian conflicts and slow speeds of turning vehicles.

At the Executive Avenue intersection, a right-only turn lane from Mount Vernon Avenue, curb extensions, an additional crosswalk and shorter crossing distance across Executive Avenue are proposed. The change would remove one parking space and offer room for a bus shelter and green space.
At Russell Road, curb extensions and a new crosswalk with the removal of 12 parking spaces are proposed. There would be room for green space and a bus shelter. A few parking spaces would be added on Russell Road.
At Glebe Road, an elongated roundabout is proposed to slow vehicle speeds. Refuge islands would be provided for pedestrian crossings.
