ALEXANDRIA, VA — Just over a week after a fatal shooting prompted Alexandria leaders to speak out about violence, National Night Out events will be held to support crime prevention in the city.

National Night Out is an annual event that will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 1. Participating communities will host cookouts, block parties, open houses and more. Public safety agencies like Alexandria Police, Alexandria Sheriff's Office and Alexandria Fire Department will participate along with city leaders.

According to Alexandria Police, the event seeks to "heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for anti-crime programs, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized, and working with law enforcement to help prevent crime."
