New Alexandria School Board Member Tim Beaty Inducted After Special Election
Tim Beaty, who was elected by special election, officially joined the Alexandria City School Board Thursday night.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Alexandria City School Board has full membership again after a member elected through a special election was inducted Thursday night.
Tim Beaty joined the School Board after winning the Jan. 9, 2024 special election for one of the District A seats. Beaty is a parent, substitute teacher and retired global strategies director for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Beaty's term lasts through Dec. 31, 2024, as all nine School Board are up for election in November.
"We are excited to welcome Mr. Beaty to serve on our School Board," said School Board Chair Michelle Rief in a statement. "Mr. Beaty has not only contributed directly to ACPS as a substitute teacher but the greater Alexandria community as well, volunteering and serving in various capacities throughout the city."

The special election happened after former member Willie Bailey resigned. The Alexandria City School Board has nine members, with three each from Districts A, B and C. District A includes eastern areas of the city like Old Town, Del Ray, Potomac Yard and Arlandria.
"I am truly honored to serve on the Alexandria City School Board," said Beaty in a statement. "Throughout my professional career, I have worked in the labor movement, advocating to improve the rights and conditions of working people. I look forward to bringing that experience to the division as we move forward with collective bargaining to enhance labor-management relationships between employees and the division."

Beaty's entry to the School Board comes as annual budget discussions are underway at the school district. The School Board held a public hearing Thursday on the combined funds budget, which includes the operating budget. Budget adoption is scheduled for Feb. 22, although the final budget is subject to the city government's budget process.
