ALEXANDRIA, VA — After Rubia's Tacos closed in January, a new restaurant is planning to open in the space in Alexandria's Del Ray neighborhood.

Rubia's Tacos was a short-lived concept from Chef Nicole Jones at 2309 Mount Vernon Avenue after Jones closed Stomping Ground. Now, a change of ownership application was filed to the City of Alexandria for a new restaurant called La'Baik.

The application describes the restaurant as serving Mediterranean fast food with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food would be available for takeout or dine-in service. According to the application, the furniture and equipment will stay the same. Proposed hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Rubia's Tacos had opened in May 2023 after Stomping Ground closed in April. Stomping Ground, which dated back to 2015, was described by the Del Ray Business Association as a "woman-owned small business that reflected our vibrant neighborhood and its inclusive values, with incredible food made from local ingredients." Jones also owns Virginia's Darling and Mae's Market and Cafe and is a partner at Bagel Uprising.
