Noah Lyles, Others To Be Inducted In ACPS Athletic Hall of Fame

An induction ceremony for the ACPS Athletic Hall of Fame will be held by the Alexandria City School Board this weekend.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Noah Lyles and his brother, Josephus, will be among 24 individual athletes and two teams honored in the 2022 Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Alexandria City Public Schools. Noah and Josephus Lyles will also join a recognition ceremony hosted by the city.

The ACPS Athletic Hall of Fame induction will happen at 2 p.m. Saturday at Alexandria City High School. Among the inductees is Noah Lyles, who won the bronze medal in the 200m at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and this year set the American record in the 200m sprint at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. His brother, Josephus Lyles, is also a professional sprinter who has ranked in worldwide competitions. Both graduated from T.C. Williams High School, now known as Alexandria City High School.

Other individual athletes who will be recognized in the ACPS Athletic Hall of Fame are Fred Borchelt, Yolanda Brown, DeArcey “Dee” Campbell, Lisa Diggs-Moore, Sherri Funn, Robert Garda, Joe Hensley, Kathy James-Lorton, John Johnson, Rodney Johnson, Bobby Jones, Anne “Missy” Kilpatrick, Naomi Lewis-Brooks, Shirley Marshall-Lee, Marie McKeon Zack, Barry Mountain, Stephanie O’Toole, Lydell Scott, Carl Turner, Ezra Whorley, Eryk Williamson and Doug Yates.

The two teams being inducted are the 1945 and 1977 high school basketball teams. The 1945 George Washington High School boys basketball team is the high school's only team to win a state championship. The team was led by Coach Rasty Doran, All Met guard Buzzy Brown, Donald “Huck” Thomas, Dave Rice, and Ralph “Booty” Partlow, Edgar Simms and Carey Johnson.

The 1977 T.C. Williams High School basketball team, which MaxPreps named as the greatest Virginia high school basketball team of all time, will also be recognized. Led by All State guard Craig Harris and Coach Mike Hynson, the team had a 28-0 record, an average 84 points per game and won the Virginia state championship. This was the first state championship since 1945 after George Washington High School and T.C. Williams High School consolidated in the 1960s. The induction ceremony will honor Coaches Mike Hynson, Paul Hines, Mike Evans, Bob Lacey, Ralph McGuirk, Jimmy Worden as well as team members Mike Daniels, Reggie Davidson, Clarence Grimes, Craig Harris, Albert Holloway, Frank Holloway, Mark Jackson, Willie Jackson, Lawrence Miller, Michael Nelson, Doug Preston, George Richardson, Art Varnado and Anthony Young.

The Alexandria City School Board will host the induction ceremony with participation from School Board Chair Meagan Alderton; ACPS Chief of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Wendy Gonzalez representing the superintendent; and Alexandria City High School Executive Principal Peter Balas.

On Monday, Noah and Josephus Lyles will attend a recognition ceremony hosted by the city from 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. The City of Alexandria will formally recognize the brothers with a proclamation read by Mayor Justin Wilson, and Noah Lyles will be awarded a key to the City of Alexandria. Alexandria City Public Schools Interim Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt and Balas will also speak at the event.
