Sexual Assault In Del Ray Neighborhood Investigated By Alexandria Police

Alexandria Police do not believe a sexual assault in Del Ray is related to a recent sexual assault in Potomac Yard.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A sexual assault that happened overnight Wednesday in the Del Ray neighborhood is being investigated by Alexandria Police.

The assault happened to an adult woman walking after midnight in the area of Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues. Police say a stranger attacked and assaulted the victim. The woman is being treated at a hospital.

"We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community," said Interim Chief Raul Pedroso, who is filling in after Police Chief Don Hayes stepped down. "The search for the sexual assault suspect is a top priority. We have implemented increased patrols in the area and are ensuring our detectives have all the resources needed for their investigation."

Police do not believe the new incident is related to the sexual assault in the Potomac Yard neighborhood on Feb. 4. In the Potomac Yard assault, the woman was able to escape. Police have located the suspect, who is in custody in another jurisdiction.
