Special Election To Be Held For Alexandria School Board Rep

After Willie Bailey's resignation from the Alexandria School Board, certain Alexandria precincts will participate in a special election.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — After Alexandria School Board representative Willie Bailey announced his resignation, a special election will be held in January to determine a replacement.

The Alexandria Circuit Court ordered the special election for one School Board District A seat to happen on Jan. 9, 2024. District A includes the following precincts: 101 Old Town North (formerly Ladrey), 102 City Hall, 103 Lyles Crouch School, 104 Durant Center, 105 Lee Center, 106 Cora Kelly - "Chick" Armstrong Center, 107 Mount Vernon Center, 108 George Washington School, 109 Fire Dept. Headquarters, 110 Charles Houston Center and 111 Potomac Yard.

Sample ballots will become available once candidates are finalized. The deadline for candidates to file required paperwork to the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration and Elections is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5. The Virginia Department of Elections has more information on filing requirements for candidates in the School Board District A special election.

In-person early voting at the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration and Elections will begin "as soon as possible after the qualification of candidates," according to the Virginia Department of Elections. Voters should check back for more information after the Dec. 5 candidate filing deadline. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot will be 5 p.m. on Dec. 29. Early voting is expected to conclude at 5 p.m. on Jan. 6.

The deadline for registering to vote or updating an existing voter registration will be Dec. 27. Provisional ballots will still be available to voters not registered after the deadline.

The Alexandria School Board accepted Bailey's resignation, effective Nov. 20. Bailey was one of three District A representatives on the School Board. A deputy fire chief for the Office of the Fire Marshal at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, he was elected to the School Board in 2021 after serving on Alexandria City Council from 2016 to 2019. He is also on the board of Operation Warm and organizes local children's coat distributions. A graduate of T.C. Williams High School, now Alexandria City High School, Bailey serves on boards and commissions like the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Educational Opportunities for Alexandrians and Carpenter’s Shelter.
