ALEXANDRIA, VA — With school out, parents may be looking for ways to keep their children entertained during the summer season.

Luckily, Del Ray is an area with abundant activities for families. From splash parks to art camp, here are Patch's recommendations for fun with children around Del Ray.

1. Splash Parks

Location: Various locations around Alexandria

Splash parks are an easy way to entertain kids while cooling off. Some options near Del Ray include Potomac Yard Park (2501 Potomac Avenue, Alexandria, VA), Drew Park (2310 S Kenmore St., Arlington, VA) and Virginia Highlands Park (1600 South Hayes Street, Arlington, VA).

2. First Thursday

Cost: Free

Location: Along Mount Vernon Avenue:

The Del Ray Business Association's First Thursdays are street festivals held on the first Thursday from April to September between 6 p.m. and dusk. The remaining events include First Thursday: Del Ray’s Country Music Showdown on Aug. 3 and First Thursday: Star Wars Day in a Neighborhood Far, Far Away on Sept. 7.

3. Del Ray Artisans' Kids Just Wanna Have Fun Art Camp

Cost: $350 per child, but scholarship support can be requested at Gallery@DelRayArtisans.org

Location: 2704 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA 22301

Children 8 to 12 can join this week-long summer camp creating art with professional artists. Students will paint, sculpt, journal and more, and outdoor activities will be possible during good weather. All supplies will be provided.

4. Del Ray Farmers Market's Power of Produce Club

Cost: Free

Location: 2311 Mt Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA

On select dates, children can join themed interactive activities at the farmers market. Activities are geared toward ages 4 to 12. Remaining dates in 2023 are: Aug. 19 (vendor thank you cards) and Sept. 16 (pumpkin painting).

5. Duncan Library events

Cost: Most free, check individual events

Location: 2501 Commonwealth Ave., Alexandria, VA

The library in the Del Ray neighborhood holds regular events for children. Families can find events appropriate for different age groups such as story readings. Check out other Alexandria Library locations for more events.

6. Indoor playgrounds

Cost: Varies by activity

Location: Various locations in Alexandria, VA

Various play centers offers classes, camps and birthday parties to let kids release their energy and have fun. A few options in Alexandria are Pump It Up (2000 Eisenhower Ave.), Get Air Trampoline Park (340 S Pickett St.), and Scramble Alexandria (5412 Eisenhower Ave.).

7. Great Waves Waterpark/Cameron Run Regional Park

Cost: Varies by activity

Location: 4001 Eisenhower Ave., Alexandria, VA

Cool off at this waterpark with slides, wave pool, kids zone, food and more. Other features at the Cameron Run Regional Park include a play structure for children 3 to 12, batting cages and mini golf.
