City of Fairfax Fire Dept. Gets Life-Saving Equipment Donation

Forcible entry door systems will allow firefighters and first-responders to be able to get to trapped victims more easily.

The City of Fairfax Fire Department received a valuable donation of life-saving equipment last week, thanks to the guys behind a tasty sandwich place.

Firehouse Subs, a chain of casual restaurants known for their hearty sandwiches, was founded by brothers and former firefighters Chris and Robin Sorenson—so naturally, they have a soft spot for helping out their fellow first-responders.

In 2005, the Sorenson brothers established the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, to provide educational opportunities and life-saving equipment for first-responders and public safety organizations. Since then, the foundation has donated more than $7.7 million to organizations across the country and even in Puerto Rico.

Last week, the City of Fairfax Fire Department was one of those organizations.

The Firehouse Subs foundation donated two forcible entry door systems and props to the department—a donation of more than $10,000 worth of equipment.

"The donated equipment will be used to train firefighters on how to forcibly enter locked doors, gaining access to trapped victims in rescue situations," foundation representatives explained.

In addition, the foundation donated a $14,000 chest compression system to the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Department, and 500 pickle buckets to the Red Cross, used in their disaster supply kit program and distributed to survivors in emergency situations. The buckets are worth roughly $2,100.

This isn't the first time that Firehouse Subs has partnered with The Red Cross—last year the restaurant's foundation donated boxed lunches to victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Firehouse Subs has 690 locations and counting, including several in Northern Virginia. In Fairfax, there are two locations—9548-D Main St. near the Fairfax Turnpike, and at 12120 Fairfax Towne Center.
