Democrat Salim Out-Raises GOP Opponent Reid In Latest Campaign Filing

FAIRFAX, VA — Democrat Saddam Salim out-raised his opponent, Republican Ken Reid, in the race to fill the Virginia Senate seat in the 37th District.

In his latest campaign finance filing last Friday, Salim reported that his campaign received $65,500 between July 1 and Aug. 31, according to the Virginia Public Access Project.

Reid, who entered the race in April, reported his campaign received $40, 718 in donations between July and Aug. 31. He reported receiving $6,026 in cash contributions of more than $100; $1,944 in cash contributions of less than $100; and $12,478 in in-kind contributions of more than $100. He also reported receiving $20,000 in loans.

Reid's top five donations were:

  • $1,000 - Larry Lindsey
  • $1,000 - Tom Toth
  • $500 - Bobbie and Bill Kilberg
  • $310 - Steve Rogers
  • $251 - Anthony Sabio

In total, Reid's campaign spent $14,782 for the reporting period. Starting with a balance of $8,295 on July 1, the Republican candidate $34,231 in cash on Aug. 31.

For the reporing period, Salim's campaign received $61,414 in cash contributions of more than $100 and $4,086 in cash contribution of less than $100.

Salim's top five donations were:

  • $7,500 - Virginia Automobile and Truck Dealers PAC
  • $5,000 - Edward Rice
  • $5,000 - Baltimore Washington Construction & Public Employees Laborers PAC
  • $5,000 - Virginia Trial Lawyers PAC
  • $3,000 - AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees)

Salim's campaign started the reporting period with a balance of $51,178 and spent $65,500 between July 1 and Aug. 31. In total, the campaign had an ending balance of $58,918.

This will be the first general election under the recently redrawn General Assembly districts. The new 37th District covers Fairfax City, Oakton, Vienna, Tysons, and Falls Church.

During the 2023 legislative session, Chap Petersen was the senator representing the old 34th District. Salim defeated the incumbent in the June 20 Democratic Party primary.

The first absentee ballots for the General Election will be mailed on Friday, Sept. 22, which is also when early voting begins. Early voting will continue through Nov. 4, which is three days before Election Day.
