DUI Suspect's Death Prompts Investigation Of Fairfax City Police
A man arrested Sunday in Fairfax City for driving under the influence later died in police custody, according to authorities.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — A man who was arrested for driving under influence Sunday night in the City of Fairfax died later while he was in police custody, according to authorities.
City police responded just after 8 p.m. to investigate a single-vehicle crash involving a 66-year-old man at the Shell Gas Station in the 11200 block of Fairfax Boulevard.
"Fire and Rescue personnel arrived at the scene and evaluated the man, who refused any further medical treatment," according to the incident report. "Preliminary information suggests that the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol and was later taken into custody."

The man was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where police obtained an arrest warrant for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the report.
"At the jail, the man reported feeling ill and was transported to an area hospital, where it was discovered he was suffering a medical emergency," according to the report. "Life-saving measures were taken; however, the man later died at the hospital."

Following CFPD protocol regarding the in-custody death of a suspect, the regional Critical Incident Response Team, which is made up of investigators from other police agencies, opened an investigation of the incident.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the man's death, according to police. The results of the autopsy and CERT investigation will be presented to the Commonwealth's Attorney for review. Since the incident remains under investigation, police have not released the man's identity.
