FAIRFAX, VA—There's so much going on around here involving Independence Day that it actually encompasses two days. The festivities begin Sunday, June 30, with "A Hometown Celebration" at City Hall and continue Thursday, July 4, with a parade through downtown and fireworks after that.

(As for Independence Day weather, according to the National Weather Service: Showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly after 5 p. m. Partly sunny, with a high near 92. Heat index values as high as 100.)

Sunday's celebration begins at 5 p.m. at the Veterans Amphitheater on the ground of City Hall, 10455 Armstrong Street. Look for games, food trucks from city businesses and a 7 p.m. concert by the "award-winning" City of Fairfax Band. Should rain interfere, the event will be relocated to the Stacy S. Sherwood Community Center at 3740 Old Lee Highway—including food vendors.
