Social media is no longer just a great way to keep in touch with old classmates from high school or share photos of your dog dressed up for Halloween—it's always proven itself invaluable to businesses.
In keeping with the ever-changing face of today's business world, Fairfax High Academy announced this week it will offer a new course on "social media marketing and design," beginning with the 2014-15 school year.
"Social Media Marketing and Design will merge multimedia formats into digital media marketing, and includes social, business, and education applications for a global society," Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) officials said Tuesday. "Students will get the opportunity to apply, develop, and explore their creative and artistic skills with all of the marketing tools involved with today’s social media."
FCPS officials said the class's curriculum will cover content creation, search engine analytics, and application development, as well as other social media tools for marketing, research, entertainment, education, entrepreneurship, branding and professional networking.
"In addition, students will cover ethical and legal aspects, marketing theory, marketing strategy, and career pathways for social media specialists," officials said.
The course is designed so that students can take it along with any of the other eight current academy program areas.
"[The course] was developed after extensive curriculum research and community feedback, and was a result of collaboration between Fairfax Academy and Career and Technical Education administration," officials said.
Fairfax Academy for Communications and the Arts, attached to Fairfax High School, is one of six high school academies in the Fairfax County Public Schools district.
