FAIRFAX CITY, VA — On Monday, the organizers of Fairfax City Restaurant Week announced that they were extending the annual celebration of the city’s diverse selection of food establishments to Sunday, March 9.

The seven extra days give diners more opportunities to try out a new eatery and order from a specially priced menu offered as part of restaurant week.

Restaurant week is a collaboration with three of the city’s business-focused organizations: Fairfax City Economic Development Authority, Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and the Old Town Fairfax Business Association. All menus can be found online.

One of the diverse city restaurants participating in restaurant week is Okonomi Asian Grill. The name translates to "have it your way" from Japanese and more or less fits Okonmi’s build-your-own rice bowl concept, according to its website.

Patch reached out to several of the eateries that are offering lunchtime deals during restaurant week. We’ve already heard from Patriots Pub & Grill, One Bar & Grill, Commonwealth Brewing Company, The Auld Shebeen, Big Buns Fairfax, and Ornery Beer Company.

Owner Alex Kang shared the following about what restaurant week specials Okonmi is offering.

What lunch specials will you offer during restaurant week?

“We're offering our normal weekday Hawaiian-ish + drink promo at a discounted price: it's $10 for food and a drink-- Some bubble tea shops cost more than this.

“We also have a dinner Buy One, Get One half off deal with our curated bowls when you order online with the promo code: RW2025”

For those who may not be familiar with Ornery, what do you want newcomers to know about what your restaurant offers?

“We're still in our ugly duckling stage; there are tables to dine-in, but ordering online saves time. Things are constantly changing here for the better. I only had 1 fridge, a burner and a grill when I first took over this space by myself. The tables were pumpkin orange. We're still growing and you should expect this place to look and feel different in the near future.

The Lemongrass bowl includes a choice of lemongrass chicken or pork with the following toppings: mixed herbs, do chua, fresh cucumber, and crushed peanuts. This is Okonomi 's version of vermicelli bowls [Bún Thịt Nướng] commonly found at Vietnamese restaurants. Pineapple fish sauce highly recommended. (Okonomi Asian Grill)

“Our specialty is probably the pineapple fish sauce — we're the only ones in the entire area that actually use high quality Vietnamese fish sauce — for the record, three crabs isn't high quality. You won't get what you normally see in Vietnamese restaurants in the area; we're serving things closer to what you'll actually see in Korean and Vietnamese homes. eg. Vietnamese restaurants don't serve all of the herbs we have, but they're very common places at home.

“We've been around for a little bit now and some of our regulars that have been with us have said they've been losing weight and becoming healthier overall because they've put us into their weekly rotation. I think that's pretty awesome.”

What do you like about being a business owner in Fairfax City?

“The city grows on you; it's small enough to get to know people. We've gained a bunch of regulars from the city and it's nice to be involved in the community.”
