Mayor Read Re-Elected; Fairfax Voters Pick New City Council: Election

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Shortly after 1 p.m. on Friday, the City of Fairfax Electoral Board ascertained the final vote count for the Nov. 5 general election. The State Board of Elections will meet on Dec. 2 to certify the results.

Fairfax City Mayor Catherine S. Read was re-elected with 7,221 votes, defeating challenger Susan Hartley Kuiler, who had 5,311 votes, according to the unofficial results.

• Susan Hartley Kuiler: 5,311 (42.03%)

In the race for the six seats on the Fairfax City Council, Stacy R. Hall, Thomas D. "Tom" Peterson, Billy M. Bates, Stacey D. Hardy-Chandler, Anthony Amos and Rachel McQuillen were the six candidates who received the most votes.

Only four votes separated McQuillen from the candidate who finished seventh in the race, Kate Doyle Feingold. Finishing just 1 percentage point behind McQuillen, Doyle Feingold could've asked for a recount. Instead, she decided to congratulate the new councilmember-elect.

"I am proud of our independent team and their majority on council!" Doyle Feingold said, in an email to Patch. "I think they will do a great job. I’m always happy to help anyone who wants to run as an independent in our City, I think the more people we have engaged and contributing to our city the better off we will all be. Rachel will be an excellent addition to council and I’m so happy she had the courage and determination to run an awesome campaign with integrity and grace!"

• Taylor A. Geaghan: 4,938 votes (9.27%)
• Amini Elizabeth Bonane: 1,955 votes (3.67%)
• Jack F. Ryan: 2,228, votes (4.18%)
• Write-In: 281 votes (0.53%)

All five of the School Board candidates were elected to fill the five-member board: Carolyn S. Pitches, Kristina M. Cecere, Sarah M. Kelsey, Amit S. Hickman, and Lauren A. Bartelme. City voters also supported the school bond that was on the ballot.
