McLean Cadet Named West Point's First Astronaut Scholar
West Point Cadet Zoe Winston's passion for mathematics and biostatistics research garner academic accolades.

MCLEAN, VA — Cadet Zoe Winston was recently named the the first Astronaut Scholar at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, which is located in upstate New York. A McLean resident, Winston is a member of the school's Class of 2025.
“The Astronaut Scholarship is an invaluable opportunity to make connections with academically driven mentors and peers from around the country,” said Winston. “This honor would not have been possible without the support of my friends, mentors, and family. I’m extremely excited to participate in the mentorship and professional development programs offered by the Foundation and grow as both a leader and a researcher.”
Originally created by the astronauts of the Mercury 7 mission, The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships to college students who are studding science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The recipients must also exhibit "astronaut characteristics,"which include intelligence, a passion for science and exploration, and self-motivation, among many others.

“We’re proud of Zoe’s accomplishments and her tremendous potential. We’re also grateful to the Astronaut Scholar Foundation for this impactful partnership and opportunity," said Dean of the Academic Board Brig. Gen. Shane Reeves, in a release.
A mathematical sciences major, Winston channels her passion for math and a desire to help others through her research in biostatistcs. Using a statistical approach to the study of cellular metabolism, she hopes to identify clinical biomarkers to help physicians diagnose and treat Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy early. The condition is a leading cause of maternal mortality.

Winston's goal is to pursue a doctor of philosophy degree in biostatistics and serve as an officer in the Adjutant General Corps.
