Personal Property Taxes Due October 5th
Bills may look different this year. Everything you need to know to pay your personal property and motor vehicles taxes.

The city of Fairfax is reminding residents about property (car) taxes by October 5th to avoid a 10 percent penalty plus interest.
“Bills for personal property taxes and motor vehicle licenses (formerly known as “decal fee”) will look a little different this year, thanks to the new computer software in use by the office of the Treasurer and Commissioner of the Revenue,” according to the City of Fairfax Government.

The 2015 personal property tax rate is $4.13 per $100 of assessed value.
The Commonwealth will pay 49.04 percent of the tax for the first $20,000 of a personal use vehicles’ assessed value. The tax reduction appears on tax bills as a credit. Both the personal property and the motor vehicle license tax must be paid to receive the city decal.

The offices of the Treasurer and the Commissioner of the Revenue in City Hall will be open weekdays from 8:30 am to 5 pm and will be offering extended hours from 5-7 p.m. on October 5th.
Decals will be mailed October 19 and decal enforcement begins November 15. Decals must be displayed on all vehicles garaged in the city.
Payment options:
To avoid long lines and delays, promptly check the bill and report any changes to the Commissioner of the Revenue at 703-385-7880.
Bills may be paid in person. However, if no changes are needed, save time by paying by mail or via City Hall drop-boxes (check only). If paying in person, please bring the entire bill.
Consider paying online through the city’s website using a credit card (additional fee applied) or e-check (free service).
