Bring the Kids to See Mr. Skip Monday. Since the kids have no school Monday, bring 'em to see Mr. Skip, the beloved local children's performer, at Old Town Hall. Cancer Sucks—And You Can Help. If you're a fan of the food at The Greene Turtle in Old Town Plaza, well, you have double the reason to eat there this Tuesday. Northern Virginia Jewish Book Festival. The Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia (JCCNV) is pleased to take you on a literary journey with leading local, regional, national and international authors, now through next Wednesday, Nov. 13. In addition to outstanding programs and conversations, a comprehensive selection of books will be available for purchase throughout the week — hundreds of titles to choose from for adults and children. 55+ and Looking for Ways to Volunteer? Attend an orientation with RSVP-Northern Virginia this Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. at the City of Fairfax Regional Library. RSVP-Northern Virginia engages persons 55 and older in volunteer service to meet critical community needs while providing a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of the volunteers. RSVP recruits volunteers, assesses their availability and skills, and then matches their interests, skills and experience with the best volunteer placement. As an added benefit to volunteers, RSVP members are eligible to receive mileage and meal reimbursement, supplemental insurance while serving, and ongoing group service and recognition events. RSVP-Northern Virginia is sponsored by Volunteer Fairfax in partnership with Volunteer Alexandria and Volunteer Arlington. Forum: Persecution of Women and Minorities in the Muslim World. Organizers describe this forum: "Panelists at this event will discuss reasons the Muslim World has become an epitome of violence and discrimination against women and minorities despite Muslims claiming to have a peaceful religion. Award-winning speaker, author and activist Qasim Rashid will be the keynote speaker at this event. An attorney by profession, Rashid’s recent book The Wrong Kind of Muslim has earned him plaudits from national and international media organisations. His work has appeared in USA Today, National Public Radio, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Virginia Pilot, and San Francisco Chronicle, among various other national and international outlets." Powwow for the Veterans. The Native American and Indigenous Alliance of George Mason University will hold the 11th Annual Veterans’ Powwow at George Mason University. Come experience traditional Native American music and dancing, and purchase handcrafted items from a number of vendors. There will also be special candy dances for children. Free, open to public. This Thursday, Nov. 7, 1-9 p.m. with veterans' ceremony of honor at 5 p.m. Dewberry Hall, The Johnson Center, George Mason University (4400 University Drive, Fairfax).
Venture 'Into the Woods' at Woodson. An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A witch...who raps? They're all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim's fractured fairy tale, and you can see it live on stage, by Woodson High drama students. Nov. 9, 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m.; and Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. Special Saturday Matinees for children that feature only Act One on Nov. 9 and 10 at 2 p.m. All seats $5. Buy tickets online.
