A first look at New Year's Eve suggests it will be a cold one, with a threat for snow showers to usher in the new year. Here's the forecast
STERLING, VA -- The final week of 2016 will be a wild mix of 60-degree weather, two chances for snow showers and lows dipping into the mid-20s. And one of those chances for snow showers is New Year's Eve, according to the National Weather Service.
There's a chance for rain through mid-day Tuesday, with the high reaching 62 degrees. Wind gusts Tuesday could reach 20 mph.
Expect a much colder Wednesday, with highs reaching near 46 degrees, with a chance for rain or snow showers Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, according to the weather service. The chance for any precipitation is 50 percent.

Friday's high will be near 40 degrees, with temperatures Friday night falling to a low around 26 degrees.
New Year's Eve will be cool and sunny, with a chance for rain and snow showers Saturday night and into New Year's Day. The chance for precipitation is 40 percent.

Tuesday: A chance of showers before 2pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 62. Southwest wind 9 to 14 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 46. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph.
Wednesday Night: A chance of rain and snow showers after 2am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 35. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
Thursday: A chance of rain and snow showers before 8am, then a chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 50. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
