What's Open, Closed For New Year's 2025 In Fairfax City
As 2025 begins, there will be various closures and schedule changes for the New Year's holiday in Fairfax City.
FAIRFAX CITY, VA — After closures during the Christmas holiday, residents will get more a week later as they count down to 2025.
This year, New Year's Day falls on Wednesday, Jan. 1 and may result in holiday closures and schedule changes on Dec. 31 as well. In Fairfax City and the rest of Fairfax County, schools continue to be closed for the extended winter break. Local government offices and some other services will be closed for several days.
Here are all the openings and closings to know around Fairfax City and Fairfax County for New Year's Eve on Dec. 31 and New Year's Day on Jan. 1.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed from Dec. 23 to Jan. 5.
ABC Stores: Virginia ABC stores typically close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
Courts: Fairfax County courts are closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
Community centers: Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services locations will be closed on Jan. 1, including community centers, senior centers and teen centers.
Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center: Closed on Jan. 1.
Historic Blenheim: Closed on Jan. 1.
Department of Motor Vehicles: Virginia DMV locations will be closed on Jan. 1.
CUE Bus: No Service on Jan. 1.
Fairfax Connector: Regular bus service will run on Dec. 31, and Sunday service will run on Jan. 1. The only routes running on Sundays are 101, 109, 151, 152, 161, 162, 171, 310, 321, 322, 371, 401, 402, 423, 463, 467, 558, 559, 574, 605, 615, 630, 642, 651, 662, 672, 721, 803, 901, 921, 924, 937, 950, 952, 954, 983, RIBS 1, RIBS 2, RIBS 3, RIBS 4 and RIBS 5.
Libraries: Fairfax County Public Library locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1.
Metro: Metro's shutdown of some downtown stations will end on Dec. 31. Metrorail's regular weekday service will be offered on Dec. 31 from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. with free fares after 8 p.m. Reduced Sunday service will be offered from 7 a.m. to midnight on Jan. 1.
Park authority: Historic sites, visitor centers and nature centers are closed on Jan. 1. Select facilities will be closed on Dec. 31.
Post offices: Closed on Jan. 1.
Recreation centers: Fairfax County recreation centers are open 5 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1.
Trash and recycling: No service for Fairfax City residents on Jan. 1 Wednesday and Thursday routes collected on Jan. 2.
Trash and recycling centers: The I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on Jan. 1.
