What's Open, Closed On New Year's Day 2026 In Fairfax City

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Fairfax City residents will head into the new year starting with a holiday, prompting closures and schedule changes affecting government offices, schools, transit and other services.

Here are the openings and closures to know on Thursday, Jan. 1:

Fairfax City government offices: Closed on Jan. 1.

Fairfax County government offices: Closed on Jan. 1.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2.

ABC Stores: Virginia ABC stores will close at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 1.

Fairfax City Museum and Visitors Center: Closed on Jan. 1.

Historic Blenheim: Closed on Jan. 1.

Community Centers: Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services community centers, senior centers and teen centers will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on Jan. 1.

Courts: Fairfax County courts are closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Department of Motor Vehicles: Virginia DMV locations will be closed on Jan. 1.

Fairfax Connector: Buses will run on a Sunday schedule. The only routes that operate on Sundays are: 101, 109, 151, 152, 161, 162, 171, 310, 321, 322, 371, 401, 402, 423, 463, 467, 558, 559, 574, 605, 615, 622, 630, 642, 651, 662, 672, 721, 803, 901, 921, 924, 937, 950, 952, 954, 983, RIBS 1, RIBS 2, RIBS 3, RIBS 4 and RIBS 5.

Libraries: Fairfax County Public Library locations close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and are closed on Jan. 1. Richard Byrd Library is closed until further notice.

CUE Bus: Modified weekday schedule on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. No service on Jan. 1.

Metro: Metro will have weekday service from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and weekend late night service from 6 a.m. to midnight. Fares will be free from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Dec. 31.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 1.

Recreation centers: Open from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 1.

Trash and recycling: For Fairfax City, no service on Jan. 1. Thursday and Friday routes will be collected on Friday, Jan. 2. For Fairfax County collection customers, there are no trash collection changes on Jan. 1. If you have a private trash collector, check with them for any schedule changes. The I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on Jan. 1
