Ashburn Man Fatally Struck By SUV On I-495 In Fairfax: Police

An Ashburn man died after he was hit by an SUV on northbound I-495 in Fairfax, police said. A Falls Church man was charged with hit and run.

FALLS CHURCH, VA — An SUV fatally struck a pedestrian on northbound I-495 in Fairfax County on Sunday, Virginia State Police officials said.

Authorities identified the pedestrian as 55-year-old Douglas C. Haskett II of Ashburn. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the SUV, 46-year-old Brian Diffell of Fall Church, was arrested in the Mosaic District after the crash. He is charged with one count of felony hit and run.

If convicted, Diffell could face up to 10 years in prison, based on Virginia's sentencing guidelines.

The crash occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday on northbound I-495 service road for exit 50, authorities said. Investigators said a Chevrolet Traverse SUV struck Haskett, who died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV called Fairfax County police after the crash. State troopers found the driver, who they identified as Diffell, in a Mosaic District parking garage. Diffell was taken into police custody on Sunday night.

State police officials said their investigation is ongoing and they are continuing to work with the Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney.
