Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 26

It's hump day

  1. The Board of Trustees of The Mary Riley Styles Public Library will hold a public meeting at the library at 7:30 p.m.
  2. Falls Church resident and cartoonist Kevin Rechin will hold a free cartooning workshop Thursday at ArtSpace from 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The workshop is open to all ages. Participants are asked to bring their own materials and everyone must register via email at info@fallschurcharts.org. Rechin’s work has been viewed in a lot of places over the years. He was responsible for drawing Washington Nationals baseball players for an advertisement for the D.C. Lottery and he designed a superhero for the bedroom of two young boys appearing on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover Home Edition.”
  3. On this day in 1962, President John F. Kennedy warned Russia that the U.S. will not allow Soviet missiles to remain in Cuba.
  4. On this day in 1993, the NFL announced their new expansion team, the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte.
  5. If today is your birthday, you share it with Hillary Rodham Clinton (64-years-old) and gospel singer Mahalia Jackson (100-years-old). Happy birthday!
