What's Open, Closed For MLK Jr. Day 2024 In Falls Church

FALLS CHURCH, VA — Residents and businesses in Falls Church honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 15.
As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation and other services in Falls Church.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federally observed day of service. The City of Falls Church will have a Dr. Martin Luther King Day March for Unity and Freedom organized by the Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation. The route starts at the intersection of Tinner Hill Rd. and S. Washington St. in front of the old Target, heads north on S. Washington St. to E. Fairfax Street and end at the Falls Church Episcopal Church. The march starts around 11:15 a.m., but activities happen between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Residents and drivers should expect road closures for the march from about 11 a.m. to noon:
- S. Washington St. (Route 29) between E. Broad St. (Route 7) to S. Maple Ave.
- Tinner Hill Rd between S. Maple Ave. to S. Washington St. (Closed starting at 10 a.m.)
- Wallace St. between S. Maple Ave. to S. Washington St.
- Hillwood Ave. between E. Annandale Rd. to S. Washington St.
- W. Annandale Rd. between S. Maple Ave. to S. Washington St
- E. Annandale Rd. between Hillwood Ave. to S. Washington St.
- E. Fairfax St. between Douglass Ave. to S. Washington St.

City of Falls Church government offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Fairfax County government offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Falls Church City Public Schools: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Falls Church Community Center: Open 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Jan. 15.
Animal shelter: The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will be closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Courts: Arlington County and Fairfax County Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court will be closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Department of Motor Vehicles: Closed on Jan. 15.
Fairfax Connector: Fairfax Connector will have holiday weekday service on Monday, Jan. 15. Routes that operate holiday weekday service are: 101, 109, 151, 152, 159, 161, 162, 171, 301, 305, 306, 308, 310, 321, 322, 334, 340, 341, 350, 351, 352, 353, 371, 372, 373, 401, 402, 423, 424, 462, 463, 466, 467, 507, 552, 553, 557, 558, 574, 605, 615, 621, 622, 623, 630, 631, 632, 640, 641, 642, 650, 651, 652, 660, 703, 721, 803, 901, 921, 924, 937, 950, 951, 952, 954, 983, RIBS 1, RIBS 2, RIBS 3, RIBS 4 and RIBS 5. Libraries: Mary Riley Styles Public Library and All Fairfax County Library branches will be closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Metrorail: Over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Metro will close a portion of the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines on Friday, Jan. 12 through Monday, Jan. 15. During the four-day closure, buses will replace trains with no rail service between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Arlington Cemetery on the Blue Line; and between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Clarendon on the Orange and Silver lines. The Rosslyn and Court House stations will be closed. Customers traveling through the work zone should expect significant delays and allow at least 30 minutes of additional travel time to account for shuttle buses. Other Metro lines, including the Red Line, will operate on a Saturday holiday schedule from 5 a.m. to midnight on Monday, Jan. 15. View Metro timetables here.

Parks: Colvin Run Mill, Sully Historic Site and Clemyjontri Park's Carousel are closed. Other Fairfax County parks will be open Monday, Jan. 15.
Post offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 15.
Recreation centers: Fairfax County recreation centers are open regular hours on Monday, Jan. 15.
Trash and recycling: City of Falls Church collections happen on Wednesdays. There will be no change in the trash and recycling collection schedules on Monday, Jan. 15 for Fairfax County trash customers. Residents with private collection should contact their haulers.
Trash and recycling centers: The Recycling and Disposal Centers at the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex will both be open on Monday, Jan. 15.
