Assault With Wooden Slat Leads To Stafford Man’s Arrest: Sheriff

Stafford County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 48-year-old man in connection with an assault on Anvil Road Sunday.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A 48-year-old Stafford man is facing a malicious wounding charge after he used a wooden slat to assault someone midday on Sunday, according to authorities.

A deputy from the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office responded around 11:51 a.m. for the report of an assault on Anvil Road. The victim, who had injuries to his head and arm, was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

After speaking to witnesses, the deputy learned that the victim and suspect had been traveling together when the suspect, identified as Marcellus Berryman, accused the victim of taking his property, according to the incident report.

The two argued, which led to a fight in the road. During the fight, Berryman picked up a wooden slat and assaulted the victim, before fleeing the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

While obtaining a warrant for malicious wounding for Berryman, the sheriff’s office learned that Berryman was wanted out of Maryland on a similar warrant.

Around 9:52 p.m., deputies located Berryman driving in the area of Short Street. After conducting a traffic stop at Fredericksburg Tattoo Works at 348 Warrenton Road, deputies arrested Berryman without incident.

Deputies served Berryman with the malicious wounding warrant and also charged him with driving on a revoked license, according to authorities. He was then held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
