Details Emerge In Highway Police Shooting

A Virginia State Police officer was injured in a shooting incident while trying to arrest a pedestrian on I-95. But details on who shot who are scarce.

According to a press release issued last night, the incident occured at 3:24 on the southbound right shoulder of I-95 in Caroline County near mile marker 116.

Trooper M.H. Hamer was in the process of placing the pedestrian in the vehicle when a struggle ensued.

"As a result of the struggle, shots were fired injuring both parties," reads the VSP press release.

The press release did not specify who fired the shots which injured both parties. Nor did it identify the pedestrian Hamer was attempting to apprehend.

According to a report in the Washington Post, Hamer suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

Hamer works out of the Culpeper bureau of the VSP, covering Spotsylvania and Stafford Counties.

According to the VSP, Hamer was taken by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect, who sustained life threatening injuries, was taken by helicopter to MWH.

The incident brought traffic to a near standstill for hours on I-95, causing siginificant backups as investigators combed over the scene.

Social Networks briefly buzzed with speculation that the shooting could be in some way related to the Virginia Tech shooting. Those thoughts were quickly put to rest as news of the resolution of the danger in Blacksburg cycled through the media.

As of 10:49 p.m., three lanes remained closed on I-95 southbound causing a 10 mile backup.
