Dog Saved from Life on Chain Arrives at Old Dominion Humane Society

Dehydrated, Undernourished and Missing Fur, Titan Survived Days of 100-Degree Temperatures

Fredericksburg, Va. (September 6, 2025)—Titan was barely surviving, his life consisting of being on a short chain outside in scorching temperatures. He never had the freedom to run through the grass freely or the relief of air conditioning in a comfortable home. The dog became dehydrated and malnourished, as well as missing patches of his fur due to a yeast infection and nails that curled under. When a local Facebook post in August showed his picture and deteriorating condition, begging for a foster for the dog, Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) volunteers knew they had to step in to help. The five-year-old dog was transported to ODHS, where he’s now recovering.

Chrissy Hamilton, founder of ODHS, had just taken several dogs from a hoarding case and the facility was filled to capacity, but she couldn’t turn Titan away. She’d make sure he had a space to call home. While at ODHS, he receives medicated baths, nutritious meals, social interaction with other dogs and humans--and extra peanut butter-filled dog bones.

Despite being neglected, Titan seems to know he’s safe now, wagging his tail at the sound of the volunteers’ voices, taking treats gently and spending time with humans.

“Titan’s an incredible dog who’s playful and comes bounding over to you when you call him,” said Hamilton. “He loves to play fetch, go on Sunday hikes and is an all-around fun dog. Being such a lovable dog says a lot about his resilience, and we’ll make sure the family who adopts him is one that’s devoted to him. It’ll make up for everything he’s been through in life.”

Described by volunteers as a gentleman and a “gentle giant” with a lot of love to give, the canine enjoys bathtime, which made the process of medicated baths twice weekly a smooth one. Titan lives up to his name—he’s had to have strength to endure his past.

ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg. Adoption events are Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m., Fridays from 6-8 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Application surveys in advance are preferred and take priority over walk-ins.
