Flamingo Bandit Caught on Camera

Police post pic portraying poacher of plastic phoenicoparrus.

A case of plastic petty larceny was captured on a home surveillance video camera three nights ago, giving police a handy, if slightly blurry, glimpse at a suspect with a taste for flamingos.

According the Fredericksburg Police Spokesperson Natatia Bledsoe, the man was caught on surveillance cameras stealing a pink plastic flamingo in the 1300 block of Dander Street near midnight on Sunday, Nov. 13.

Police say that around the same time the flamingo was stolen, a wicker chair was reported stolen a block and half away on Augustine Ave.

Bledsoe said that digital home surveillance systems are becoming easier to use and increasingly popular with both commercial and residential property owners.

"It's common for us to get comments, not so much reporting thefts or crime, but for residents to review the film and alert us to suspicious activity witnessed," said Bledsoe in an interview.

The suspect, dubbed the Flamingo Bandit by Bledsoe in an email, could face charges of petty larceny if caught. There is no evidence that the suspect tried to enter either home.
