Here's The Richest Resident In Virginia

Forbes analyzed the fortunes of the country's richest people to identify each state's wealthiest person. This is the magazine's fifth edition of the list.

The richest resident in Virginia is Jacqueline Mars, 79, who owns an estimated one third of Mars, Inc., the world's largest candy maker. Mars, who lives in The Plains in Fauquier County, shares the No. 10 spot with her brother, John Mars, each of whom is worth $28.1 billion.

That's up from $23.6 billion in March's list of the country's billionaires, when she ranked 33rd. Mars and her siblings inherited McLean-based Mars Inc., in 1999 when their father, Forrest Sr., died. Mars is known for candy (3 Musketeers, M&Ms, MilkyWay, etc.) but has many other brands outside the sweets area, including pet food and gum.

The net worth of the individuals on the list varies. For example, Washington is home to the world's two richest and most recognizable billionaires; Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, but in certain states, the richest people only had a nine-figure net worth, Forbes writes.

Collectively, the wealthy on the Forbes list had a net worth of $875 billion, which the magazine says set a new record.
