Getting Through the ‘Dog Days’ of Summer is Easier with Cute Rescues

Fredericksburg, Va. (July 21, 2025)—Join the rescue dogs at Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) for a month of activities offered to the community. If it’s motivation to exercise, the dogs will make it more fun with free, weekly Saturday Strolls and Sunday Hikes. Practicing yoga moves like the downward dog is more fun with the cutest puppies around. A nail clinic for that favorite canine and an adoption event at the Farmer’s Market are just some of the events scheduled to get through the “dog days” of summer.

Saturday Stroll—August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

Starting the weekend with a Saturday Stroll with one of the smaller rescue dogs is a great way to get exercise—for humans and four-legged friends. It’s free to the public, and volunteers will match guests with dogs and provide crates (if needed). Strollers will drive their furry friends to a local trail for a stroll at a relaxed pace. There’s no need to register—just show up at ODHS at 7:45 a.m., and the volunteers will be at the door.

ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg, Va., 22408.

Sunday Hike—August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

Looking for a great workout combined with an adventure? The Sunday Hike is where furry friends get some vigorous exercise and socialization with their human companions beginning at 7:45 a.m. Volunteers pair the perfect pooch with participants, who’ll caravan with the dogs in their cars to a local trail. Sunday Hikes are a great way to meet others in the community while doing a world of good for the rescue dogs that need to get out in the fresh air.

ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg, Va., 22408.

Fur & Feathers Dog Nail Clinic—August 2

Is it time for a “pawdicure” for that favorite canine? The Fur & Feathers Dog Nail Clinic at ODHS is available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with no appointment necessary. The cost is $20, and 50 percent of the proceeds will be donated to caring for the rescue dogs at ODHS.

ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg, Va., 22408.

FXBG (Fredericksburg) Farmers Market at Hurkamp Park—August 9

Be sure to include an adorable rescue dog on the grocery list when visiting the Farmers Market, because ODHS will have some of the cutest canines available for adoption. Stop by for a cuddle, watch some of the zoomie experts at play and meet that new best friend from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Farmers Market at Hurkamp Park is at 500 William Street, Fredericksburg, Va., 22401.

Puppy Yoga at Awesome ‘Possumz—August 10

Don’t miss a beginner-friendly, low-impact yoga class at Awesome ‘Possumz, where the pups from ODHS show up to make it a special event. Yoga class is from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and puppy cuddles are from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $28 per person, and 20 percent of the proceeds go to ODHS for the care of the rescue dogs. Register at risingdawnyogastudio.com.

Awesome ‘Possumz is located at 211 William Street, Fredericksburg, Va., 22401.

ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg. Adoption events are Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m., Fridays from 6-8 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Applications in advance are preferred and take priority over walk-ins.
