Hikes, Strolls, a Dog Nail Clinic, Art and More for the Community
Fredericksburg, Va. (June 23, 2025)—Looking for something to do during the dog days of summer? Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) has dozens of events for everyone. From strolls and hikes with rescue dogs that are free to the public to a nail salon for a furry friend and an art session to paint a beloved pet and so much more, ODHS will provide the rescue dogs and fun.
Saturday Strolls -- July 5, 12, 19, 26
Weekends are better with a Saturday Stroll featuring one of the smaller rescue dogs. Meet at the adoption center at 7:45 a.m., where volunteers will match guests with dogs. A caravan will head out to one of the local trails, and dogs hitch a ride in participants’ cars. Crates are available at ODHS. The strolls are set at a relaxed pace. There’s no need to sign up beforehand—just come to ODHS and join the pack.
Sunday Hikes – July 6, 13, 20, 27
Meet other dog lovers at the adoption center to take a trek on a local trail on Sundays at 7:45 a.m. Volunteers will match guests with the perfect furry partner for some fresh air and exercise. Guests will take the dogs to trails in their cars, and crates are available at ODHS.
Fur & Feathers Dog Nail Clinic – July 5
Indulge that favorite furry friend in a luxuriating pedicure at the adoption center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is needed, and the pedicure is $20 per pet. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the nail clinic will be donated to the ODHS rescue dogs.
Fredericksburg (FXBG) Farmers Market at Hurkamp Park – July 12
While picking up the freshest produce and browsing through the market, stop by to meet the rescue dogs from ODHS from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors will meet some of the cutest cuddlers and playful pups available for adoption.
‘Barks and Brushes: Pain Your Pet’s Portrait’ – July 26
“Unleash” the inner artist at ODHS’s “Barks and Brushes,” where attendees create portraits of their favorite pets. Visit the ODHS website to book a spot, send a photo of the pet and show up to the adoption facility, where pre-sketched canvases will be waiting for guests to paint. No art skills are needed. Cost is $45, which includes the pre-sketched canvas and supplies. Puppy cuddles are from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., and painting is 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Proceeds go to the care of the ODHS rescue dogs.
ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg. Adoption events are Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m., Fridays from 6-8 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Applications in advance are preferred and take priority over walk-ins.
