Police are investigating the shooting of a Virginia State Police officer, according to Seargant F.L. Tyler, public information officer with the Virginia State Police. He had no other information to release at this time.

According to Natatia Bledsoe, spokesperson with the Fredericksburg Police Department, the city police dispatch center has been monitoring radio traffic related to the shooting of a Virginia State Trooper at the Spotsylvania and Caroline counties on I-95 near mile marker 116. The southbound lanes of the highway have been completely blocked off.

Bledsoe said her dispatch center learned that both the officer and a suspect suffered gunshot wounds and were flown by helicopter to a hospital.

Speculation is beginning to emerge on social networking websites that this may be related to today's shootings at Virginia Tech which have left two people dead. Police say that such assumptions amount to speculation at this point.
