Turn Lane Construction Starts Monday On Route 1 In Stafford
Drivers can expect a lane closure Monday on Route 1 southbound at Potomac Creek Drive during the construction of a new exit off Route 1.

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Starting Monday, Sept. 16, motorists driving southbound on Route 1 in Stafford will encounter a lane closure at Potomac Creek Drive (Route 761) in Aquia, as construction begins on a new left turn lane, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
The $1.8 million project is scheduled for completion in July 2020, VDOT said in a statement. Construction work will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to noon on Fridays.
The project "is designed to create a safer turning environment for motorists entering Potomac Creek Drive from Route 1 southbound," VDOT said. Potomac Creek Drive is between American Legion Road and Enon Road (see map below).

The project will include minor improvements to Route 1, such as pavement treatment and restriping. Utility relocation work began near the project site earlier this year and is complete, VDOT said.
This week, VDOT and a contractor, Tavares Concrete Company Inc. of Lorton, are installing signs and moving construction equipment into the work zone.

VDOT plans to monitor traffic conditions on southbound Interstate 95 and Route 1, and it says it will lift lane closures in the work zone in case of an accident on I-95 or if drivers experience major delays on Route 1.
