FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A 24-year-old man is facing a drug-related charge after a Stafford County sheriff's deputy found him passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle in the parking lot of a Fredericksburg convenience store on Saturday night, according to authorities.

The deputy responded around 6:22 p.m. to the Sheetz at 10 Washington Square Plaza to investigate the report of someone passed out in their parked vehicle.

After making contact with the driver, the deputy spotted burnt tinfoil in the center console area of the vehicle, according to the incident report.

"Field sobriety tests were performed, and the subject was deemed not to be impaired at the time," according to the report. "Based on the observed drug paraphernalia, a search of the vehicle was conducted, and additional drug paraphernalia was located. Additionally, a small white rock consistent with controlled substances was located."

The deputy arrested the driver, who was identified as Clayton Coley of Nokesville, according to the report. Coley was charged with possession of a controlled substance and held under a secured bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

Although no information was available about any hearings connected to Saturday's arrest, Coley does have a disposition hearing scheduled for July 22, 2026 in Prince William General District Court, according to court records.

That hearing is connected to a Sept. 19, 2024 arrest on a DWI/drugs (first offense) charge, which was Class 1 misdemeanor, according to court records. He pleaded nolo contendere on July 22, 2025, and was sentenced to 12 months of supervised probation. In addition, his drivers license was suspended for one year and he paid $106 in court costs.
