Virginia Weather: 527 Crashes in Snow Saturday, First Fatal Wreck Reported
BREAKING: Troopers have assisted with 686 disabled vehicles. Residents still encouraged to stay off the roads, says Virginia State Police.
BARBOURSVILLE, VA — The driver of an SUV in a rollover wreck Saturday afternoon in Greene County was the first fatality in the snow storm that has left many state roads under a layer in snow or ice. Virginia State Police was continuing to warn residents to stay off the roads Saturday night and Sunday morning because of the potential for roads to refreeze.
The fatal crash occurred shortly after noon off Preddy Creek Road in Greene County. The driver, only identified as a male until family is notified, struck another vehicle, ran off the road and overturned into a creek, according to VSP spokesperson Corinne Geller. The man died at UVA Hospital in Charlottesville.
Following a wreck earlier Saturday, a driver is facing DUI and weapons charges after a head-on collision with a sheriff's office cruiser seriously injured a deputy in Caroline County. The deputy is being treated at Mary Washington Hospital and is expected to recover. The other driver, a 30-year-old Ruther Glen resident, has been charged with DUI-1st offense, having a concealed weapon while intoxicated and DUI maiming.
