Halloween Display Guide: Check Out These Scary Houses Around NoVA
From creepy dolls and animatronics to hockey-themed haunts, see Halloween displays in our 2023 Northern Virginia guide.

VIRGINIA — October means Northern Virginia's ordinary yards are turning into creepy displays filled with ghosts, zombies, skeletons and more.
One of the best family traditions is visiting Halloween displays around the neighborhood up to Oct. 31. We asked Northern Virginia Patch readers to share their Halloween yard displays for our 2023 guide.

20333 Advantage Ct, Ashburn, VA
This "Spooky Elementary" display open through Oct. 31 is a creepy playground with frights like "baby" spiders. New animations were added this year. Visitors are asked to stay off the grass.

4400 Dolphin Ln. Alexandria, VA 22309
Haunting of Yacht Haven is a creepy neighborhood favorite with lights and around 150 animatronics covering ever horror you could imagine. On Halloween, children will be treated to candy. Hours are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday to Sunday through Halloween. Visitors are asked to be respectful of the residential neighborhood and avoid private driveways. 1700 Duke St. Alexandria, VA 22314
The Ghosts of Duke & Holland is a large display best viewed from the Table Talk Restaurant. The display is up through Oct. 31.

3001 Russell Rd, Alexandria, VA 22305
For years, one home on Russell Road had a spectacular pirate display. Now, Colleen Gehrig is bringing the pirates back to the neighborhood with her "Pirates Revenge on Russell Road" display through Nov. 5. Lights and electronic features are on nightly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Visitors are asked to view the display from the sidewalk.

323 E Oak St, Alexandria, VA 22301
This display features 60 plus inflatables and more packed into a small yard. Hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily through Nov. 3.

237 E. Monroe Ave Alexandria VA 22301
This Washington Capitals and hockey-themed display called "Flight of the Penguin" lights up at night.


720 S Veitch St, Arlington, VA
This display called The Penrose Cemetery is made to look like a real cemetery. It is open from Oct. 19 to Nov. 5.

969 N Harrison St, Arlington, VA 22205
Visitors will enjoy plenty of kid-friendly inflatables and spooky lighting at this display. It is open through Nov. 5.

3063 Cahill Lane, Dumfries, VA 22026
The Spooky House on Cahill Lane features a synchronized light and music show. The homeowners curated the music and programmed it with the lights. According to Chris Ault, "our neighbors love it and always say they're looking forward to it and that we're an important part of the community and always make Halloween special for their kids." The display is up, weather permitting, daily from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly through Nov. 1. Parking is limited in the townhouse community. This display called yard of fear has been open since Oct. 18.

610 Spring St, Herndon, VA 20170
Colleen Delawder and Bob Matthews's Historic Herndon Halloween House is celebrating its 19th year with a "creepy dolls" theme. The homeowners stocked up on used items to gather dolls and even got donations from family, friends and neighbors. Over 500 dolls are guaranteed to give you the creeps at this display. In addition, a small Chucky figurine will be hidden every day, and the location will be revealed each night on Instagram and Facebook. Visitors are encouraged to stop by during the day to catch the little details and take another look after dark. Free parking is available in Herndon's town lot. Here's a summary of The Beastro at Queens Row - Freak Show provided by the homeowners: "Step right up, folks, and prepare to be mystified, mesmerized, and mystically amazed! Welcome to The Beastro - Freak Show (at Queens Row), right here in Herndon, where the bizarre meets the extraordinary, and the eerie intertwines with the enchanting. Our wondrous display is a carnival of oddities, curiosities, and the supernatural, featuring mind-bending magic, uncanny fortune-telling, astonishing feats of strength, and jaw-dropping wonders that will leave you spellbound. Don’t miss this one, folks!" The display is open through October and is best viewed at night. Visit the display's Facebook page for updates.

9310 Brentsville Rd, Manassas VA
This neighbor in Manassas offers display with plenty of figurines, a coffin and a wagon.

6927 Churchill Rd, McLean, VA 22101
This creative display is a take on Jurassic Park. The whole family helped with the display, with the mother using paper mache techniques to make the props with help from the kids, and her husband helping to install the props. The community even helped out by providing recyclables for props through the Buy Nothing McLean group.

7658 Northern Oaks Ct, Springfield, VA 22153
Carnival of the Creeps is carnival-themed display open nightly from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. through Oct. 31. The homeowners hope to have a few carnival games for children. Visitors are asked to avoid walking through the display.

18 Arbor Ln, Stafford, VA 22554
This spooky display features 11 to 12-foot giants and is open through Nov. 1. Visitors are asked to be courteous to neighbors and watch for children.
