Construction is currently taking place on a new pedestrian median between the Huntington Metro Station and the Huntington Station Shopping Center on North Kings Highway.
The Jefferson Manor Civic Association (JMCA) lobbied for the new median and Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay also supported the project, said JMCA President Chris Soule in a recent email. The owners of the Huntington Station Shopping Center were also in favor of the new median.
"It is hoped that it will provide traffic calming, and be one of many small items that transform the North Kings Highway corridor into a more pedestrian centric area, inline with the type of transit oriented development coming to the area," Soule said in his email.
The median is mostly completed and resurfacing of the road is now taking place throughout the day. According to VDOT, another small construction project is expected to begin on North Kings Highway in the summer of 2014 and slated to be completed in fall 2014.
The project will remove a failing retaining wall along North Kings Highway just north of Kathryn Street. An estimated cost for the project is about $1 million. Click here for more information on this project.
