Downed Trees And Wires, Outages Impact Route 1 Corridor

FORT HUNT, VA—A thunderstorm ripped through the Route 1 corridor of Fairfax County Thursday afternoon, leaving behind downed trees and power lines along with power outages.

Dominion Energy's power outage map showed various outage areas from Huntington to Mount Vernon. The most significant outages occurred between Fort Hunt and Mount Vernon. In Mount Vernon, over 800 lost power west of Little Hunting Creek along with 700 north of Dogue Creek. In Fort Hunt, over 500 lost power east of Little Hunting Creek. These outages were in effect at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Route 1 area didn't have as many outages as the Telegraph Road corridor in the Kingstowne and Newington areas, where over 4,000 lost power.

As for traffic impacts, Fairfax County Police reported these road closures as of 9:20 p.m.:

• 4500 block of Neptune Drive
• 9000 block of Beatty Drive
• Beatty Drive/River Farm Drive
• Gibbs Street/Colonial Avenue
• Neal Drive/Cedardale Drive
• Washington Avenue/Mt Zephyr Street
• Washington Avenue/Jackson Place
• Old Mill Road/Patton Boulevard
• Paul Spring Parkway/Alexandria Avenue

The southeastern part of the county was under a severe thunderstorm warning through 4:30 p.m. "At 3:42 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Fort Hunt, moving east at 30 mph," stated a weather update from the Fairfax County emergency department.
