Strong Storm Prompts Weather Decision At Fairfax County Schools On Jan. 9
Expected inclement weather is causing Fairfax County Public Schools to adjust its schedule for Tuesday, Jan. 9.
FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A strong storm headed to the region prompted Fairfax County Public Schools to adjust its schedule Tuesday. Schools will not close early, but afternoon and evening activities are canceled.
The cancellations apply to extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training courses Adult and Community Education classes, Adult High School and GED, and recreation programs by non-FCPS groups at schools.
FCPS cited the significant storm impacts coming Tuesday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning and flood watch for Fairfax County and surrounding areas. The wind warning means forecasters expect damaging winds to knock down trees and power lines, resulting in widespread power outages and difficult travel. Winds between 25 and 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are in the forecast. The flood watch means flooding is possible from significant rainfall, particularly in streams, creeks, urban areas, low-lying areas and flood-prone areas. Rainfall between 1.5 to 3 inches will cover the region with possible localized amounts of 4 to 5 inches.
