Hollin Hills House And Garden Tour Set For Late April
The tour provides a rare glimpse into the historic community designed by architect Charles Goodman.
The 2018 Hollin Hills Home and Garden Tour, a much-anticipated event for modern architecture enthusiasts, will take place April 28 from noon-6 p.m.
Designed by renowned architect Charles Goodman between 1940 and 1970, Hollin Hills is comprised of 450 mid-century modern homes in the woods a few miles south of Alexandria. It was developed as one of the first post-World War II planned communities in the D.C. area and one of the few consisting entirely of modern architecture using natural topography and landscaping as an intrinsic part of the design. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and is a Virginia Landmark Historic District.
The public's fascination with the homes dates back to 1949, when developer and builder Robert Davenport charged 25 cents to view the first available home. That viewing drew hundreds of people, leading to the home tour to emerge in 1953, and the rest is history. At the last tour in 2016, over 1,000 people attended.
