Mount Vernon To Host Naturalization Ceremony For New Citizens On July 4

People from 53 countries will become U.S. citizens on the grounds of the first president's estate during a July 4 ceremony.

MOUNT VERNON, VA — Ninety people from 53 countries will have an extra meaningful reason to celebrate Independence Day this year.

George Washington's Mount Vernon will host a naturalization ceremony with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for new U.S. citizens as part of its Independence Day celebration.

The ceremony will include the oath of allegiance by Kimberly Zanotti, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Washington Field Office director, and remarks by Julieta Valls Noyes, the assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration.

To become a U.S. citizen, candidates must go through a 10-step process once they've had a green card for at least five years or three years if married to a U.S. citizen and meet various requirements. There will be various naturalization ceremonies held across the U.S. on July 4. Ceremonies held at historic landmarks like George Washington's estate offer significance to immigrants who have completed the rigorous process.

The 90 people who will become U.S. citizens come from these 53 countries: Afghanistan, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Canada, China, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Romania, Russia, Senegal, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Sweden, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and Vietnam.

Along with the naturalization ceremony, George Washington's Mount Vernon will celebrate July 4 with An American Celebration. The event will include a visit from General Washington, daytime fireworks, a performance by the National Concert Band, 18th century magic and more. The event is available with regular admission to Mount Vernon from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
