New Capital Bikeshare Stations Proposed In Mount Vernon District

Fairfax County's Mount Vernon District could get its first Capital Bikeshare locations with rentable bikes.

FORT HUNT, VA — The Mount Vernon District is a popular place for biking with a segment of the Mount Vernon Trail to George Washington's Mount Vernon. Soon, residents could find it easier to rent a bike and get to popular destinations.

There are 12 new Capital Bikeshare stations proposed in the Mount Vernon District. This would be the first stations in the Mount Vernon District for Capital Bikeshare, a network of docking stations where residents can rent bikes and return them to any docking station.

The proposed stations are centered around the Huntington Metro Station, Fort Hunt Park and Mount Vernon Trail. They include: Huntington Avenue and Metroview Parkway, Huntington Avenue and Farrington Avenue, Huntington Avenue and Old Richmond Highway, Huntington Metro North, Huntington Metro South, Belle View Boulevard and 10th Street , Belle View Boulevard and 13th Street, Wakefield Drive and Potomac Avenue, Mount Vernon Trail and Belle Haven Park, Mount Vernon Trail and Riverside Park, Mount Vernon Trail and Mount Vernon Estate and Fort Hunt Park.

Capital Bikeshare is found at hundreds of other regional locations, including Fairfax County's Tysons and Reston, City of Alexandria, Washington, DC, Arlington County, and more. Riders use the Capital Bikeshare or Lyft app to unlock a bike or pay for a single pass at any docking location.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation will hold a virtual meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18 to discuss the proposed Capital Bikeshare locations in the Mount Vernon District and how it is funded.
