Richmond Highway Nonprofit Seeks To Give 900 Children School Supplies

Nonprofit United Community is collecting school supply donations to help hundreds of children that will head back to school.

HYBLA VALLEY, VA — Even as student are in the middle of their summer break, a Richmond Highway corridor nonprofit is thinking ahead to help students be prepared for school.

United Community, a nonprofit helping families in need around the corridor, is hosting a school supply drive. Fairfax County Public Schools start school on Monday, Aug. 21.

This year, United Community's school supply drive has a goal of helping 900 children with backpacks and school supplies. Donations are being collected through Aug. 18.

Community members can donate gift cards or needed school supplies. The $25 gift cards to Walmart or Target are most needed. Backpacks for elementary, middle or high school levels are also needed and must have room for pocket folders, notebooks, and pencil boxes and not have wheels or corporate branding.

Other needed school supplies include ballpoint pens, colored pencils, composition books, crayons, dry erase markers, glue bottles, glue sticks, index cards, markers, #2 pencils, pencil sharpeners, folders, plastic supply boxes, sticky notes, spiral notebooks, highlighters, pencil pouches, and loose leaf paper.

Items can also be purchased from United Community's Amazon wish list, and online donations to United Community are accepted.

Items can be dropped off at United Community's office, 7511 Fordson Rd., Alexandria, VA 22306.
