FORT HUNT, VA — The start of gardening season coincides with the return of a popular event at River Farm.

The Spring Garden Market at River Farm in Alexandria will be held this upcoming Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Over 40 vendors will participate, offering a large selection of plants, such as vegetable seedlings, native plants, and pollinators. Garden art, tools, books, and other horticultural accessories will be available. Master gardeners will be on site to take gardening questions.

"This is a great opportunity to support local growers and shop for some terrific plants you won’t
find other places," said Susan Klejst, vice president of development for the American Horticultural Society.

The event costs $20 per car, but the cost is waived for American Horticultural Society members showing proof of current membership. Non-members can apply the fee to a new membership at the event. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own carts and wagons, as a limited number will be on site.

The event is a fundraiser to support the long-term future of River Farm, once the northernmost of George Washington's farms and now the American Horticultural Society headquarters. All proceeds from the event support maintenance of display gardens at River Farm.

River Farm had previously been up for sale by the American Horticultural Society, leading to concerns about development that would cut off public access to the grounds and gardens. The organization took River Farm off the market after its board could not come to an agreement on selling the property. The former executive director and several board members resigned, leading to a change in leadership and a commitment to keep River Farm publicly accessible.

River Farm is normally open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. The local landmark draws visitors to enjoy its gardens and waterfront views and hosts events such as weddings.
