What's Open, Closed For New Year's 2024 In Greater Alexandria
As New Year's Day falls on a Monday, various schedule changes are planned in greater Alexandria.
MOUNT VERNON, VA — New Year's Day falls on a Monday to begin 2024, so there will be various schedule changes over several days.
Fairfax County government will be closed Monday, Jan. 1. Other services have schedule changes on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and the day after.
If you're in town, check out New Year's events like First Night Alexandria, which ends with fireworks. Other attractions open on holidays are George Washington's Mount Vernon and Ice & Lights Winter Village at Cameron Run, a holiday lights walkthrough experience at Cameron Run Regional Park through Jan. 1.

Fairfax County government: Closed on Jan. 1.
Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Dec. 18 to Jan. 1 for winter break.
Community centers: Fairfax County's Neighborhood and Community Services facilities will be closed Saturday, Dec. 30 to Monday, Jan. 1. Facilities will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 2 Human Services Transportation (FASTRAN) will not be in operation on Monday, Jan. 1.
Courts: The Fairfax County Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on Monday, Jan. 1 and Tuesday, Jan. 2.
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles: DMV locations will be closed on Monday, Jan. 1.
Fairfax Connector: Fairfax Connector will operate Sunday Service on Sunday, Dec. 31 and Monday, Jan. 1. All Fairfax Connector stores and the Customer Service Call Center will be closed on Monday, Jan. 1. Routes that operate Holiday Weekday service are: 101, 109, 151, 152, 159, 161, 162, 171, 301, 305, 306, 308, 310, 321, 322, 334, 340, 341, 350, 351, 352, 353, 371, 372, 373, 401, 402, 423, 424, 462, 463, 466, 467, 507, 552, 553, 557, 558, 574, 605, 615, 621, 622, 623, 630, 631, 632, 640, 641, 642, 650, 651, 652, 660, 703, 721, 803, 901, 921, 924, 937, 950, 951, 952, 954, 983, RIBS 1, RIBS 2, RIBS 3, RIBS 4 and RIBS 5.
George Washington's Mount Vernon: Mount Vernon is open daily, including the New Year's holiday. Current hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Huntley Meadows Visitor Center: Huntley Meadows Visitor Center will be open noon to 4 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1.
Libraries: All Fairfax County Public Library locations branches will close at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31 and remain closed on Monday, Jan. 1.
Metrorail: On New Year’s Eve on Sunday, Dec. 31, Metrorail will operate on Sunday schedule, with service starting at 7 a.m., but ending at a time to be determined after midnight. On Monday, Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate on a Sunday holiday schedule from 7 a.m. to midnight. For more details, go to https://www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables/index.cfm.
Metrobus: Will operate on a Sunday schedule on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. More details at https://www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables/.
Post offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 1.
Recreation centers: Closed on Monday, Jan. 1. Open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 31, except George Washington Rec Center, which is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
River Farm: Closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
Trash and recycling: For Fairfax County collection customers, there will be no change to the trash and recycling collection schedule for Monday, Jan. 1. If you use a private collector, contact your hauler.
Trash and recycling centers: The Recycling and Disposal Centers at the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex will be closing at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31 and will be closed on Monday, Jan. 1.
