FORT HUNT, VA — If you're planning any errands or outings in between your Thanksgiving feasts, be sure you know the openings and closings in greater Alexandria.

Fairfax County government, schools and other services will be closed on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 23 as well as Black Friday, Nov. 24. Services like transit and trash collection will be open with modified schedules.

One returning Thanksgiving tradition is the Alexandria Turkey Trot, a five-mile race in the Del Ray neighborhood drawing elite runners and thousands of participants. It will start at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving at George Washington Middle School, ending at the same location. The event benefits ALIVE, which provides food and other assistance to Alexandrians in need. In Fairfax County, the Mount Vernon Springfield Chamber of Commerce will host the Can the Bird 5K at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving. The race begins and ends in the Walmart parking lot at 5885 Kingstowne Boulevard, Alexandria, VA.

Fairfax County government offices: Closed Nov. 23 and 24.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Wednesday, Nov. 22 through Friday, Nov. 24.

Courts: Fairfax County courts close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 22 and will be closed Thursday, Nov. 23 and Friday, Nov. 24.

Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles: Closed Nov. 23 to 25.

Fairfax Connector: Fairfax Connector will operate Sunday Service on Thursday, Nov. 23. All Fairfax Connector stores, and the Customer Service Call Center will be closed on Thanksgiving. On Friday, Nov. 24, Fairfax Connector will operate Holiday Weekday Service. The Fairfax Connector stores, and the Customer Service Call Center will be open and operating regular service hours.

George Washington's Mount Vernon: Open daily, including Thanksgiving. Current hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Historic Alexandria museums: All city museums are closed on Nov. 23. On Nov. 24, the Alexandria Black History Museum will be closed, and all other museums will be open. For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/Historic.

Huntley Meadows: The visitor center is closed on Nov. 23 and 24.

Libraries: All Fairfax County Public Library locations will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 23 and Friday, Nov. 24.

Metro: Metrorail will run on a Sunday holiday schedule from 7 a.m. to midnight on Nov. 23 and a Friday schedule from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Nov. 24. Metrobus will run on a Sunday schedule on Nov. 23 and Friday schedule on Nov. 24. For more information, visit https://www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables.

Post offices: Closed on Nov. 23.

Recreation centers: Fairfax County recreation centers are closed on Thursday, Nov. 23 and open on Friday, Nov. 24.

Trash and recycling: Fairfax County collection customers will have collection services on Thursday, Nov. 23. Private collection customers should check with their hauler for any changes.

Virginia Railway Express: There is no VRE service on Nov. 23, and there will be an "S" schedule on Nov. 24. For more information, visit www.vre.org.
