Arts Council of the Valley Board Votes to Close Court Square Theater Dec 31 (patch.com) — Harrisonburg’s Court Square Theater will shut its doors on December 31 after the Arts Council of the Valley board voted to end operations, citing steep funding cuts and shrinking audiences. Leaders say the move protects ACV’s broader mission, with grants, public art, First Fridays, and Smith House Galleries expected to continue serving Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

Longtime staple Glen's Fair Price to close Jan. 1 (dnronline.com) — Downtown Harrisonburg is losing Glen’s Fair Price on Dec. 31 after 85 years, as the family-owned shop closes and sells its building to the Harrisonburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority for new offices and apartments. Longtime customers are stopping by for half-off deals and to say goodbye to a store known for its quirky mix of costumes, cameras, and party supplies.
   

3. Harrisonburg Fire Department urges caution with bulky coats and car seats (whsv.com) — Harrisonburg’s fire department is warning parents that bulky winter coats can make car seats dangerously loose and increase injury risk in a crash. Instead, they recommend lighter layers, blankets over the harness, and offer free local car seat safety checks with possible incentives to help families keep kids secure this winter.
   

4. Harrisonburg pair sentenced in overdose death of Northern Virginia teen (rocktownnow.com) — Two Harrisonburg residents have been sentenced to long federal prison terms for distributing fentanyl that led to the 2023 overdose death of an 18-year-old Northern Virginia high school student. Prosecutors say the drugs were sourced in Harrisonburg and sold through a former JMU student, then passed along to the teen, who died from fentanyl poisoning days later.
   

5. Sen. Kaine introduces new bill aimed to help coal miners access Black Lung benefits (nbc12.com) — From Harrisonburg, Sen. Tim Kaine is spotlighting a new Black Lung Benefits Improvement Act aimed at making it easier for coal miners to access medical care and legal help. The bill would tie benefits to inflation, expand black lung clinics, and streamline claims, addressing bureaucratic hurdles that have kept some miners and families from getting needed treatment.
