SPRINGFIELD, VA — Three adults were found dead with gunshot wounds in the basement of a Springfield house Thursday afternoon, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Police said they believe the incident in the 8500 block of Wild Spruce Drive was domestic-related and that there is no threat to the community. A handgun was found near the three bodies, Fairfax County Police Lt. Col. Eli Cory said at a media briefing.

Two of the people were men and one was a woman. The woman in her 30s and a man in his 20s had multiple gunshot wounds, while a man in his 40s was shot once in the upper body, Cory said. At this time, the relationship between them is unknown, he noted.

Police, who did not find any evidence of forced entry into the home, are looking into the possibility that the shootings were a murder-suicide but are not ready yet to offer any determination on what happened, Cory said.

Around 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, a housekeeper called 911 after finding the three bodies in the basement, police said. The housekeeper and a nanny were in the upper level of the home when the shooting occurred.

A 2-year-old was at home at the time of the shootings, but was not injured. Two other juveniles live at the house but were not at home when the shootings occurred, police said. The three children are in the custody of family and friends.

Cory said the FCPD will provide additional details about the identifies of the people as the investigation proceeds. Neighbors told NBC4 that the family moved into the home a little over a year ago.

Police said they are canvassing the neighborhood as part of their investigation. Anyone with information about the deaths can contact the FCPD at 703-246-7800.
