SPRINGFIELD, VA — A Fairfax County fire station placed a new fire truck into service on Monday, replacing an old truck that had accumulated more than 170,000 miles over the past 19 years.
The truck, a 2022 Pierce Velocity Heavy Duty Aerial Ladder, is now part of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department’s Station 22 in Springfield. The unit replaced a 2004 Pierce Aerial purchased by the Greater Springfield Volunteer Department 19 years ago.
The new truck, Truck 422, responded to its first emergency incident on Interstate 95, shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday.

Truck 422 was designed by a committee of experts within the department to ensure maximum safety and operational performance, according to the Fairfax County Fire Department.
The truck has an improved turning radius, and improvements to both the emergency and scene lighting will help with firefighter safety, the fire department said. The truck also comes with lightweight ladders for rapid deployment at fires.

The big ladder on top of Truck 422 is a 105-foot heavy duty steel ladder. Truck 422 has a pre-piped waterway on the ladder to allow for rapid water application, through a nozzle at the end of the ladder, when responding to large or elevated fires, according to the fire department.
