Here are the top three stories today in Lynchburg:

  1. Randolph College inducted Sue Ott Rowlands as the 11th president at a ceremony on Saturday. According to the college, Rowlands comes to Randolph most recently from Northern Kentucky University, where she served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. She began her term in office at Randolph on Jul. 1, 2022. (WSET)
  2. The American Heart Association partnered with businesses and community teams on Saturday to help raise funds for heart disease with the Lynchburg Heart Walk. Held at Riverfront Park, the walk was sponsored by BWX Technologies, Centra Health, Pacific Life, the University of Lynchburg, Liberty University, and Auto-Owners Insurance. The Association said funds raised from the event will help fight the number one and number five killers of Americans – heart disease and stroke. (WSET)
  3. Lynchburg city officials are hoping a 2024 fiscal year budget can help address areas of concern for Lynchburg City Schools and public safety. Due to an increase in incidents in their courthouses, Lynchburg’s Sheriff Don Sloan has been asking for four additional deputies to help out with their primary responsibilities in the court. Lynchburg City Schools has also asked for an additional $7 million from the city to help support raises for staff and teachers. The city council has until the end of May to vote on a new budget for 2024, which begins on Jul. 1. (WSLS 10)
